With Paddle for Our Hudson well underway, our second paddler profile is Allie Weill! Allie’s life was transformed by experiencing our onboard teen programs, time as a volunteer, and then later as a crew member. We are grateful to Allie for paddling for Our Hudson and valued the opportunity to learn a bit more about what inspired Allie to paddle:

Clearwater: What inspires you to Paddle for Our Hudson?

Allie: “I am paddling for the Hudson because Clearwater has been a transformative part of my life, from an onboard program as a teenager to volunteering and then working on the boat years later. It helped build my sense of self and sense of place. Now I live in California, in the Sacramento area, and I have sought to know my local waterways and landscape in the same way.”

Clearwater: Where are you paddling during the challenge?

Allie: “My city is at the nexus of the American and Sacramento rivers, and I spend a lot of time paddling and rowing those waters, where I can see herons, bald eagles, tugboats, and murals on city bridges. I am mostly paddling there, with many of my miles from rowing with a local masters rowing team. I plan to match my fundraising for the Hudson with a donation to an organization that supports the American River. But this week I have been paddling out east again, in the Adirondacks, close to the source of the Hudson up on Mt. Marcy, and it’s wonderful to be back on the beautiful waters of New York!”

Paddle for our Hudson is Hudson River Sloop Clearwater’s new summer paddle challenge and fundraiser running from Memorial Day weekend until July 26. In its first year, the program challenged participants to paddle 55 miles in celebration of Clearwater’s 55th sailing season. Learn more about Paddle for Our Hudson.
