Clearwater to Host Hudson River Themed Virtual Speaker Series
BEACON, NY – In conjunction with the launch of the 3rd edition of The Hudson: An Illustrated Guide to the Living River, Clearwater will host a virtual speaker series featuring three of the book’s authors, plus one special contributor.
“As a presenter and host for this series, I’m delighted to be joined by engaging speakers who have both a passion for and expert knowledge of the Hudson,” said Board President, Steve Stanne. “We will explore its physical dimensions, ways of seeing and depicting the river through time, its fascinating fishes, and the extent of our scientific understanding of the Hudson and what it suggests for the future.”
- January 13, 2021, 7:30PM: Steve Stanne – “Of Time and Rivers Flowing: The Physical Hudson”. Fresh and salt water; ebb and flood currents; high and low tides; depths dark as night and shallows full of sun – this talk will explore the dynamic forces influencing life in this arm of the sea.
- January 20, 2021, 7:30PM: Dr. Roger Panetta – “New Ways of Seeing: Panoramas of the Hudson River”. An examination of the rise of the panorama craze in the nineteenth century and the focus on the Hudson and other rivers as topics of study. Are there contemporary iterations – does this way of seeing the river exist today?
- January 27, 2021, 7:30PM: Dr. Brian Forist – “Tales and Tails From School: Reflections on Teaching About Hudson River Fish”. This talk will focus on a Clearwater educator’s time teaching about the 200+ species of fish in the river, lessons they taught, and lessons we still need to learn.
- February 3, 2021, 7:30PM: Dr. Dave Strayer – “A Few Thoughts About Science and the Future of the Hudson River”. – The Hudson is extraordinarily well-studied and constantly changing. The presentation will review recent additions to our understanding of this dynamic ecosystem, and discuss what science predicts are changes to come.

Since 1996, The Hudson: An Illustrated Guide to the Living River has been an essential resource for understanding the full sweep of the great river’s natural history and human heritage.
