POINTS ALONG THE HUDSON RIVER, NY–This Thursday evening, July 23, residents of nine municipalities along the Hudson River, stretching from Saratoga County to New York City, will hold candlelight vigils along their waterfronts, looking to light the way to a Cleaner Hudson. The vigils are part of a rising movement to press General Electric to complete dredging of PCB-polluted river sediments it generated from two former plants over three decades.
The company has announced plans to end its PCB cleanup work by the end of the year, when it is done with Superfund-related requirements. The Campaign for a Cleaner Hudson, a coalition of business leaders, environmentalists, fishing groups and others who love the Hudson, has rallied to put pressure on GE to keep its cleanup going until the river is fully recovered.
More than 70 municipalities have adopted a resolution calling for the company to “finish the job” by entering into a voluntary settlement agreement with the Federal Trustees and the NYS Canal Corporation. Also, 200 state lawmakers from both houses have signed a letter to GE’s CEO Jeffrey Immelt to meet its full responsibility to “make the river a safe and usable resource” once again.
The Candlelight for a Cleaner Hudson events begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, at nine waterfront area parks. All are invited to participate. Here is a full list of candlelight vigil locations and contact information:
