Zumtobel supports sustainable product design throughout each luminaire by using high quality materials and components. Zumtobel also looks to green solutions in operating its operations in Highland, NY; as a good green neighbor in the community, the company operates a revolutionary waste water system. In 2000, Zumtobel was faced with a septic system that could no longer meet the needs of its growing company. In exploring their options, they were approached by an ecologically-minded local water and sewer administrator with a revolutionary idea – simple beds of marsh grass could be used to clean waste water as effectively as the more traditional systems. Today, Zumtobel is the proud caretaker of a 10,000 square foot artificial wetland, which is cleaner, more energy-efficient and less costly to maintain than traditional septic systems. Zumtobel uses “green” manufacturing processes and efficient product design to provide people with optimum lighting quality. Utilizing all technical options available, Zumtobel is able to quickly turn new technologies such as waveguide, micro pyramidal structure and LED into high-quality products, systems and sophisticated lighting concepts. In applied research, particular emphasis is placed on energy efficiency and offers lighting solutions to give customers’ projects credit toward LEED certification.
