TEANECK, NJ –Ten artist sketches made aboard the sloop Clearwater’s 1969 maiden voyage are included in an exhibit honoring Pete Seeger’s life and legacy that opens Saturday, September 6, at 8 PM, at the Puffin Foundation’s gallery in Teaneck, NJ.
The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater organization, founded by Pete Seeger, is loaning the pencil drawings by Thomas B. Allen for the exhibit, which comes nine months after the iconic musician/activist’s death at age 94. A collection of photographs of Pete and Toshi Seeger, selected by their grandson Kitama Cahill-Jackson, will also be featured in the month-long show. Cahill-Jackson will speak at the opening event.
The drawings of the Clearwater’s maiden sail from Maine to New York Harbor include images of Pete Seeger and his musician crewmates on board or performing at docking points along the way, along with depictions of the sloop under sail in various venues.
Pete Seeger dreamed up the idea of the sailing sloop, a replica of vessels that sailed the Hudson River in the 18th and 19th Centuries, to serve as a dynamic platform for singing, educating and advocating for the health of his beloved Hudson River. Forty-five years after the first sail from Maine to New York Harbor, the sloop continues to sail and Clearwater Inc. continues the work of inspiring, educating and grass-roots engagement to protect the river.
The Puffin Cultural Forum public gallery is located at 22 Puffin Way, Teaneck, NJ.
