Community is Invited to a Family-Friendly Event

BEACON, NY – The public is invited to join project partners Hudson River Clearwater, Sargent-Downing Gardens and Nursery, and the City of Beacon for a community Arbor Day event that will take place on Friday, April 25, from 4:30 – 6:30 PM at the Beacon Dog Park at Memorial Park on Route 52.

The event will feature tree planting, local music, and refreshments, and special guest, City of Beacon Mayor, Randy Casale, who will deliver the Arbor Day Proclamation. The event will also feature a Native American Tree Blessing; a presentation on historic tree propagation by Richie Cabo of Sargent-Downing Gardens and Nursery; The Solar Trailer; and performances by The Rivertown Kids, Solar Sound Band, Craig Chin, Miss Vickie; and Poet Laureate, Larry Sansone.

Clearwater is participating in this Community Celebration as part of an ongoing Urban and Community Forestry grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Sargent-Downing Garden & Nursery is a not-for-profit, teaching community garden located  in Beacon, NY that offers an educational recreation program for children and parents alike which focuses on the areas of gardening, sustainability and community. Through this program, the community will also will learn about the rich history of Beacon, thanks to the Tioronda Working Group, a sub-committee of SDG. At the nursery, trees are grown for Memorial and Namesake Tree Programs, and are donated to the City of Beacon for playgrounds and placement on municipal property for future generations to enjoy. The program is led by volunteers of all ages who participate in the educational programs and maintain the grounds. Particpants are involved in seed starting, planting, harvesting food, composting, and propagating, and other activities. The group has been operating on the existing garden space at the former University Settlement Camp, now part of the Beacon City Parks since 2010.  The Sargent-Downing Gardens & Nursery is affiliated with the Beacon of Hope and the Community Foundations of Dutchess County for its fundraising efforts.  For more information, visit www.sdgardens.com/index.html.
