BEACON, NY – America’s environmental flagship, the iconic sloop Clearwater is preparing to embark on another exciting spring season of environmental education and inspirational sails on the Hudson River. The season will kick off with a public sail from the Kingston home port at the Hudson River Maritime Museum on Saturday, April 28th at 11:00 AM. Passengers can join Clearwater public sails this spring with live music, live fish, and beautiful Hudson Valley scenery. The sloop will depart every weekend from docks in Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Beacon, or Cold Spring. Tickets for these 3-hour sails are available here.
Since the launch of Clearwater, more than half a million young people and hundreds of thousands of adults along the Hudson River have experienced their first real look at an estuary’s ecosystem aboard the sloop. The Sailing Classroom program is the centerpiece of Clearwater’s education program, sailing daily with school groups ranging from 4th graders through High School and beyond.
Clearwater sails from a variety of docks from Albany to New York City, April through October. During the spring, the schooner Mystic Whaler joins Clearwater to support the demand for Clearwater’s unique environmental education programs and public sails.
Built in 1969 by folk singer and activist Pete Seeger, the sloop Clearwater was conceived of during a time when the Hudson River was rank with pollution. Seeger had a vision to clean up with Hudson by bringing people to the river, and once there, they would be inspired by its beauty to protect it. The passage of the Clean Water Act was a testament to Seeger’s efforts to restore and preserve the Hudson.
