Now Accepting Group Applications for Spring and Summer Sails
BEACON, NY – Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, America’s flagship environmental organization, has posted its schedule for the spring sailing season and will set sail on the Hudson River this April. Applications for group sails onboard the sloop Clearwater and the schooner Mystic Whaler for the spring and summer season are now being accepted; those wishing to book a sail can view the spring schedule and register online at the Clearwater website at www.clearwater.org/come-sailing/sail-schedule.
Clearwater’s sailing season runs from April through the end of October, with vessels casting off from and returning to numerous sites along the Hudson River from Albany to New York City, New York Harbor, and western Long Island Sound. Most sails are three hours long, with 5-hour sails and multi-day and overnight programs also available.
Each spring, the schooner Mystic Whaler joins the sloop through June to complement Clearwater’s onboard educational programs, as well as its charter and Public Sail programs. In addition, both vessels will offer Public Sails at Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22 at Croton Point Park, in Westchester County, NY.
Since Clearwater’s launch in 1969, more than half a million people have experienced the Hudson River’s estuary ecosystem firsthand aboard the sloop. Every sail is an ecological adventure and a voyage of discovery on a historic tall ship. Passengers have an opportunity to learn about the Hudson River and its history and ecosystem, participate in the sailing of the ship, and join in sing-a-longs with the crew.
Clearwater’s pioneering ship-based education programs are suitable for groups from fourth grade through college and include dockside orientation before departure, a call for “all hands to the halyards” to help hoist the sails, a presentation on Clearwater’s history and mission, participation in maritime and folk music, and an opportunity to take the tiller. Clearwater’s educational group sails bring history, biology, physics, and environmental science to life for schools, summer camps, Scouts, and educational groups.
Private parties, team-building sessions, weddings and gatherings onboard the sloop Clearwater or the schooner Mystic Whaler can be customized to meet each group’s needs, including accommodating catering and hired musicians. Our professional captains and crew have experience facilitating a wide variety of special events and will work to ensure that the details of each sail are arranged to perfection.
Public Sail Adventures are suitable for all ages, and engage participants with special themes, guest speakers, and musicians and provides guests with an opportunity to enjoy the Hudson Valley’s beautiful vistas and historic landmarks from the deck of a majestic 106-foot long replica tall ship. Public Sails are $50 for adults; $35 for members, and $15 for children 12 years of age and younger. Clearwater members receive a special discount when booking Public Sails. The Public Sail Schedule for the spring and summer seasons will be posted mid-March.
The sloop Clearwater is a nationally-recognized symbol of environmental awareness and provides regionally- based high quality experiential education opportunities. Clearwater education programs meet NYS Learning Standards, and are compatible with the Common Core Learning Standards.
