Our third Paddle for Our Hudson paddler profile is Dan Thaler, a kayaker who is inspired to participate by Pete Seeger’s vision for a healthy and resilient Hudson River. During the challenge, he’s paddled locally including in the Hudson River, as well as in the canals of Amsterdam. He also crafts beautiful custom-built kayaks, canoes, and SUPs at his small business, Moonlight Marine. We spoke with Dan to learn more about his love of the Hudson and his paddling journey:

Clearwater: What inspires you to Paddle for Our Hudson?

Dan: I’ve always been a supporter of Pete’s vision. Continuing the mission is important to me as a resident of the Hudson Valley and a kayak builder. The Hudson is my reach and I paddle it as much as possible. I’m always aware that people have been paddling the Hudson in wooden boats for thousands of years. This is very humbling.

Clearwater: Where are you paddling during the challenge?

Dan: For the challenge, I’ve paddled the Hudson, other local water bodies, and the canals in Amsterdam.

Paddle for our Hudson is Hudson River Sloop Clearwater’s new summer paddle challenge and fundraiser, running from Memorial Day weekend until July 26. In its first year, the program challenged participants to paddle 55 miles in celebration of Clearwater’s 55th sailing season. Learn more about Paddle for Our Hudson.
