BEACON, NY – Clearwater’s executive director Peter Gross hailed Pope Francis for his moral leadership as the pontiff’s ground-breaking encyclical on climate change was issued today.
“The Pope’s recognition that climate change is an urgent and profound moral issue requiring decisive, comprehensive action epitomizes honest and courageous leadership,” said Gross.
“We hope his voice will be joined by those of many more religious leaders around the world acknowledging that we are facing a crisis of unprecedented proportions and that ultimately we have an ethical responsibility to avoid destruction of this precious Earth,” Gross said
Pope Francis issued a 184-page papal letter Thursday describing “irresponsible” consumerism and reckless exploitation of the environment.
“Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods,” the pope wrote. “It represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day.” Read more here.
