Three years ago an earthquake and tsunami swept the coast of Japan initiating the largest nuclear disaster in the history of the world. On March 9, join Clearwater, Riverkeeper, Sierra Club and members of the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition for a march from Croton-on-Hudson to Indian Point to Peekskill to mark the anniversary of this disaster that killed and displaced thousands and released catastrophic amounts of radiation. During this gathering we will reflect on the lessons learned, particularly of concern for populations that live in the vicinity of nuclear power plants. Human error, abetted by an emergency is the main cause of accidents at nuclear power plants around the world. It is no different at Indian Point where two reactors face relicensing. The electricity they produce is fleeting and can be replaced. The harm they can do to 20 million people who live within 50 miles of the reactors in irreparable. Governor Cuomo has plans in place to replace Indian Point. Attorney General Schneiderman has just called on the Nuclear Regulatory Agency to reconsider how they assess the risk Indian Point poses to our communities. The reactors at Indian Point are old dangerous and unnecessary. They must be closed.
