Large populations in US cities present challenges with food infrastructure. Produce must be shipped long distances, sometimes thousands of miles, to get into cities - inflating their carbon and virtual water footprints.

The Science Barge in New York City strives to introduce sustainable urban farming methods in hopes of easing the burden on long-distance food sources.
