We are no longer accepting apprentice applications for June, July, or August.  We are now accepting applications for Fall and Winter 2009-2010

Apprentices: if you would like to stay onboard Clearwater in the summer, please volunteer for a week.

An apprentice is someone who works for little or no money in exchange for the opportunity to learn a skill or trade. On Clearwater, apprentices are selected by the captains to complement the skills of the paid crew. Apprenticeships last for two calendar months (one month can be also arranged). During this time two apprentices live and work aboard the sloop. They participate in all crew activities including education, sailing, and maintenance, and are given the opportunity to contribute their own special talents to the overall effort. An apprentice can be anyone 16 years and older who is willing and able to work outdoors eight to ten hours a day. Great strength and sailing skill are not as important as coordination, common sense, and an enthusiasm for learning. Critical is the ability to deal intelligently with hundreds of passengers and casual visitors to the sloop and to live and work cooperatively in a close and sometimes stressful situation. Before reporting to work, apprentices are required to pass a urine drug screen in compliance with United States Coast Guard regulations.
