2008 Positions On Board the Clearwater Sloops Apprentices An apprentice, by definition, is someone who works for little or no money in exchange for the opportunity to learn a skill or trade. On Clearwater, apprentices are selected by the captains to complement the skills of the paid crew. The position lasts for two calendar months (one month apprenticeships can be arranged) during which the two apprentices live and work aboard the sloop. They participate in all crew activities including education, sailing, and maintenance, and are given the opportunity to contribute their own special talents to the overall effort. Sailing months are April through July. Winter maintenance apprentice positions are available January through March. A weekly stipend is provided. An Apprentice can be anyone 16 years and older, who is willing and able to work outdoors eight to ten hours a day. Great strength and sailing skill are not as important as coordination, common sense, and an enthusiasm for learning. Critical is the ability to deal intelligently with hundreds of passengers and casual visitors to the sloop and to live and work cooperatively in a close and sometimes stressful situation. In compliance with United States Coast Guard regulations, sailing season apprentices will be required to pass a urine drug screen before beginning work.
