Sail the Hudson River aboard America’s Environmental Flagship
The brainchild of folksinger and river advocate Pete Seeger, sloop Clearwater is a nationally-recognized symbol of environmental awareness and a floating classroom to inspire tomorrow’s environmental leaders. Enjoy the Hudson River Valley’s beautiful vistas and historic landmarks from aboard a majestic 106’ tall ship. Learn about the Hudson River, its place in American history, and how a grassroots group of volunteers fought to save it.
Clearwater’s sailing season runs from early April through mid-November, docking at numerous sites along the Hudson River, New York Harbor and western Long Island Sound. A basic sail program is three hours long, with 5-hour sails and extended programs also available. A sail can accommodate up to fifty participants and typically include:
- Dockside orientation before departure
- Set otter trawl to gather specimens for the fish tank
- Call for all hands to the halyards to help hoist the sails
- Learning stations that include fish, invertebrates, water chemistry, ecological principals, steering, sailing, navigation and more
- Clearwater’s history and mission
- A moment of silence and reflection
- Music by the crew and sing-a-longs
