CLEARWATER APPRENTICE APPLICATION Apprentice Crewing Aboard The Sloop Clearwater Please return completed application to: Adrienne Pettit Hudson River Sloop Clearwater 112 Little Market Street Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 What Is an Apprentice? An apprentice, by definition, is someone who works for little or no money in exchange for the opportunity to learn a skill or trade. On CLEARWATER, apprentices are selected by the captains to complement the skills of the paid crew. The position lasts for one calendar month during which the two apprentices live and work aboard the sloop. They participate in all crew activities including education, sailing, and maintenance, and are given the opportunity to contribute their own special talents to the overall effort. Sailing months are April through July. Winter maintenance apprentice positions are available January through March. Who Can Be An Apprentice? An Apprentice can be anyone 16 years and older, who is willing and able to work outdoors eight to ten hours a day. Great strength and sailing skill are not as important as coordination, common sense, and an enthusiasm for learning. Critical is the ability to deal intelligently with hundreds of passengers and casual visitors to the sloop and to live and work cooperatively in a close and sometimes stressful situation. In compliance with United States Coast Guard regulations, apprentices will be required to pass a urine drug screen before beginning work. What Kinds Of Skills Are Most Needed On The Sloop? Many different types of skills are needed on board. The captains look for applicants with some combination of the following: skills in traditional maritime crafts, sailing, woodworking, and/or experience in education, environmental science, activism, and music. First-aid and lifesaving certifications are also useful. How Do I Apply To Become An Apprentice? An application is printed on the back of this page. Applicants will be selected by the captains and notified at least one month ahead of the expected time of embarkation. Apprentices receive a stipend of $50 per five day week, plus room and board (winter apprentices receive $75 per week). Applications should be directed to the CLEARWATER Captains at the above address. Tips For Applying: Apply early. Keep us informed of changes in your availability or where we can reach you. Remember that a majority of applications received are for the summer months -- June, July, and August. Applicants for other months stand a better chance of being selected. Don't forget that there are also apprenticeships for each month from January through March. Because it is very difficult to select apprentices from only a written application, we suggest that if possible, you arrange to visit the sloop, either during the sailing season or in Saugerties during the winter maintenance period, and meet with one of the captains.
